Akupunktur bättre än standardbehandling för lata öga
(Acupuncture better than standard treatment for lazy eye)
A randomised controlled trial carried out in Hong Kong has shown that acupuncture to be effective in treating anisometropic amblyopia (lazy eye), significantly improving the eyesight of children with the disorder. Eighty-eight children with an amblyopic eye were randomly assigned to receive two hours of patching of the sound eye (the standard treatment) daily or five daily sessions of acupuncture per week for 15 weeks.
Acupuncture treatment consisted of a standard five-point protocol, which was developed specifically for the study. The treatment effect, measured as the visual acuity of the amblyopic eye, improved by an equivalent amount in both groups, however the percentage of children whose ambylopia was resolved was significantly higher in the acupuncture group (16.7% for patching vs 41.5% for acupuncture).
